Advanced-RV’s headquarters in Willoughby, Ohio, provide a great jumping-off point for adventures near and far. For those considering an Advanced-RV, we often recommend trying one of our motorhomes over a long weekend, and a destination we often recommend is Niagara Falls, N.Y.
A three-hour drive from Willoughby, Niagara Falls is without a doubt one of the most notable tourist attractions in the region. A classic day at Niagara Falls involves a boat ride on the Maid of the Mist and a walk under the famous falls.
We were excited to learn that this former industrial town is getting a $40 million makeover and is already beginning to offer more attractions than it has in the past. According to a recent Wall Street Journal article by Jim Robbins, this revival places “emphasis on the region’s natural beauty and place in American history.”
Pedestrian-friendly changes include an elevator that takes visitors from the gorge to a rocky riverbank, where you can access eight hiking trails north of the falls. The scenic 1.26-mile Great Gorge Railway Trail offers views of the Niagara River, Niagara Falls and rainbow bridge from a former railroad route.
Improvements slated to open this summer include a new high-speed train station on the city’s north end near Whirlpool Bridge and an Underground Railroad Museum in a stone customs house next door. “The network of secretive routes and safe houses that began in the south terminated just over the bridge in the safety of Canada, as fleeing slaves were clandestinely taken across the border on the suspension bridge by ‘conductors’ like Harriet Tubman,” writes Robbins. “More than 25 other historic sites make up the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Area, including the landing at the base of the American Falls, where small rowboats ferried those in flight to freedom.”
